Problem

"When I hear a song I love, I want to find other similar tracks, so I can enjoy a playlist that truly matches my taste."

Goal

Design an AI-powered app that analyzes musical features of a song (such as instruments, BPM and more) to automatically generate personalized playlists.

Design Process

Research

Interviewed 17 music app users to better understand how they discover new songs and where current platforms fall short.

Ideation and Wireframing

Set the scope for the prototype, and created low-fidelity screens for user flow tests.

Design

Created a logo, brand guidelines, colors and and designed a high-fidelity prototype.

How the project came to life

For a school project in my Web Design Bachelor's Degree, I conceptualized Tunefinder, an app prototype designed to generate highly accurate playlists based on a song’s musical properties rather than user's listening trends.

Studying user needs

Music streaming platforms have changed the way we listen, but one issue remains unresolved: finding truly similar songs. Many Spotify users struggle with its “Radio” feature, which is based on user-created playlists rather than actual song analysis. The result? A cycle of recommendations that feel repetitive.

Through UX research and user interviews, I identified key problems:

  • 58.8% of surveyed users reported frustration with current recommendation systems.
  • Users wanted an intuitive, effortless way to generate playlists based on musical properties like BPM, chords, vocals, and instrumental layers rather than user behavior.
  • At the time of this project's creation, existing solutions (e.g., Stem Player, Lalal.ai) only focus on music separation rather than song discovery.

Wireframes and screens

The design of Tunefinder is inspired by best practices in music app interfaces, which evokes familiarity and makes the user more comfortable while using the app for the first time. These practices include:

  • Intuitive single-button UI that is designed to allow the users to directly use the app's main feature with a single click
  • Easy integration with streaming platforms, allowing users to sync with Spotify and Apple Music.

Final Thoughts

This project was the first time I conducted full user interviews to solve a design problem. It also allowed me to create a fully interactive prototype in Figma!
